Dr. K.K. Vijayan is a seasoned expert in marine biology, aquaculture, and fisheries, with a distinguished academic and professional background. Born on May 21, 1959, Dr. Vijayan completed his BSc in Zoology from the University of Calicut in 1980. He then earned an MSc in Marine Biology with a focus on Fisheries and Aquaculture from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1982, followed by a PhD in Crustacean Growth Physiology and Aquaculture from the Department of Marine Sciences at CUSAT in 1989.
Dr. Vijayan's career spans several decades, beginning as a Project Officer for Fisheries and Aquaculture with Matsyafed, Government of Kerala, from 1986 to 1989. He then joined the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management in Hyderabad as a Scientist. His long tenure at the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) in Chennai saw him rise through the ranks from Scientist to Senior Scientist, and eventually Principal Scientist and Head of the Marine Biotechnology Division at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi. He served as the Director of CIBA from 2014 to 2021. His expertise is widely recognised through various prestigious memberships, including the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment, the Board of Management at the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, and the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. He has also contributed significantly as a member of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority and various advisory boards and committees, including those focused on fisheries development and sustainable aquaculture.
Dr. Vijayan has undergone extensive training in intellectual property rights, science administration, and leadership development. His international experience includes post-doctoral fellowships in molecular virology and genomics in the USA and Belgium, and involvement in international project planning workshops on shrimp health management. Throughout his career, Dr. Vijayan has published over 50 research papers in national and international journals and contributed to numerous books. His work has had a significant impact on the aquaculture industry, including the development of cost-effective diagnostic kits for shrimp farming, biosecurity modules, and indigenous formulated feeds for aquaculture.
Dr. Vijayan's contributions to the field of marine sciences and his leadership in various capacities have established him as a key figure in the advancement of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries management in India and beyond.
